NOT ART FOR ARTS SAKE, ITS SURVIVAL

My practice has many themes and I work with a magnitude of inspirations, but for me it’s definitely not as simple as Art for arts sake, it’s survival.
As a woman who has been through more negative experiences than I care to imagine including an abusive and traumatic childhood, I was often told that I experienced all that I have “because I was a victim, acted like a victim,” I refuse to be a victim, I AM A SURVIVOR!

I WANT MY WORK TO BE POWERFUL AND INSTILL EXCITEMENT

For me, part of being a survivor is to overcome my past and strive to be the best I can, particularly as an Artist.
My practice, although a coping strategy for multiple conditions including PTSD, is also more than that. I want my work to speak of survival, beauty and strength. I aim for my artwork to be powerful and instil excitement and happiness in the viewers, creating curiosity, boldness and whimsy.

CHILDHOOD ESCAPISM INTO FANTASTICAL WORLDS

My love affair with books began as a child. Most of us will remember favourite childhood stories and learning to read but for me it was more, books have always been an escape and I used the stories to plunge my self into fantastical, beautiful and safe worlds, far away from reality. As an adult this interest and escapism has continued but I like to think I have built on that as an Artist; I now recreate those beautiful stories in the form of paper sculptures emerging from individual books, an ascension of the written word.

UNIQUE 3DIMENSIONAL NARRATIVES

Each of my sculptures are unique, one of a kind works of art that not only capture the story of a book but a little piece of my own life narrative, each finished piece is another dose of self healing and I hope that viewers can feel this in the work.

REMEMBER THE MAGIC OF BOOKS!

As well as my work baring highly personal connotations, I also aim for them to incite imagination and wonder in those who have forgotten how to embrace adventure and storytelling or those who have never really found love for the printed word. I want to inspire generations to explore and/or remember the magic of books!

ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND INTRICATE PAPER

The final transformation of old unwanted books into intricate paper sculptures is vital to my practice for so many reasons but I have peace of mind in the knowledge that by working with books that would otherwise be pulped or sent to landfill, my work is ethically sound in a world where climate change, recycling, up-cycling and environmental ethics is a growing concern.

99/100 OBSERVER’S PROJECT

My current project “99/100 Observer’s” will eventually see me complete the delicate alteration of a full set of Observer’s pocket guidebooks, sculpturally lifting the theme out of each book.

UPHOLD THE INTEGRITY OF EACH BOOK

When working with books I set myself strong parameters and feel strongly that the integrity of each books should still be protected; this may sound ridiculous for someone that cuts up books to create art but it is extremely important to me that I do NOT “destroy” the book or its content but rather build on and extend it.
